Dublin port tunnel gets 9km of led lighting

Signify has retrofitted the twin 4.5km bores of Dublin Port Tunnel with led lighting.

“The upgraded lighting has achieved up to 60% reduction in electricity use, based on 2022 rates,” it said. “The project is expected to save upwards of €4m in electricity costs including VAT over the coming five years.”

The existing fittings were re-used “saving an estimated €3m as opposed to new led infrastructure”, added the company.

Incumbent for 17 years, the original lights were Philips WRTL SON-T – Signify describes the whole installation as “1,800 light points”, about which Electronics Weekly has requested clarification.

As far as Electronics Weekly can tell, the housings were and are Philips Metis 2816, now fitted with led insert trays designed for the retrofit, and offering CRI70 colour rendering.

Each lantern took five minutes to strip out and replace, claimed Signify. The installers worked in the late night and early morning over five weeks.

Dublin Port Tunnel has, since 2006, provided a link between Dublin Port and the M50 road for heavy goods transport.
